From my bird book, it looks like a female Red-cockaded Woodpecker. It also says it is an endangered species. I think it was your lucky day!
You win the prize...I wasn't sure people could ID it correctly since the photos were so far away. Too bad I couldn't get closer to that tree...but...was thrilled to even see one!
I never heard of this bird. Two things I noticed. In the first picture there is another bird flying toward the tree...perhaps it's mate? and those beautifully done round holes..do you suppose this woodpecker made them? Nice eye girl. Glad you got the shots.
